Thanksgiving Week is National Family Week
Posted on 11/18/2008

This year, Sunday, November 23rd, marks the beginning of National Family Week in the United States of America. The observance of National Family Week began 40 years ago when Mr. Sam Wiley, a teacher and administrator from Indianapolis, IN organized the campaign in order to emphasize the importance of family and strengthening family efforts to ensure strengthened, well-rounded and healthy children. For 30 years now, the Alliance for Children and Families has directed National Family Week activities in the United States and Canada. These efforts are also supported by the Annie E. Casey Foundation whose motto is "helping vulnerable kids and families succeed." During this week, the citizens of Mississippi will join thousands of people and organizations across the country to celebrate the connections they have with their families and communities. This will entail embracing the premise that children live better lives when their families are strong, and that families are strong when they live in communities that connect them to economic opportunities, social networks, and services. These services include access to reliable transportation, employment opportunities, education, childcare, healthcare, housing, and support from varying community networks and organizations.
