Beverly Luckett, Public Relations Director for the Canton schools, expressed the district’s goal in this way: “The Canton Public Schools District is overcoming challenges [while at the same time] shining the light on new opportunities for growth and academic achievement,” preparing students to become lifelong learners and successful citizens.

In order to reach this goal, A Parent Center provides resources for parents who need to encourage their children to learn and/or to give them direction. There are also School-based Clinics for helping keep children healthy.

The district has invested in advanced technology systems in all the schools and has computers in every classroom.

Tim Martin, an assistant superintendent for Clinton schools, cited academic, as well as music and art emphases in the district. He listed the Three-Tier Intervention Program as a way to identify which students, not working on grade level are nonetheless capable of doing so. Jim Mason, an administrator with the Hinds County schools, listed several high school initiatives that are now in place or will be in the fall. These have a two-fold purpose: to encourage students who are high achievers to aim higher and to encourage those who might think about dropping out not to do so. Included in his list are the following: Dual Enrollment with Hinds Community College for qualified students, Online Opportunities to enable students to catch up or recover credits lost, and the Mississippi State Scholars Program wherein business leaders encourage students to complete more challenging courses.

Distinctive Offerings with the District
Each school in the Madison district has its own special emphasis. In the lower elementary schools (K-2) there is an integration of the arts and the curriculum plus two parent-led initiatives, ArtSense and ArtsAttack. In the upper elementary schools:(3-5) the focus is on technology and science with advanced technology available for students to have hands-on experience and to give parents an insight into what goes on at school. For high school seniors there is a mentoring program, “Building Bridges in Madison County,” designed for seniors only, to provide training and experience in mentoring/tutoring younger students.

Linda Shook Ward with the Pearl School District described the uniqueness of Pearl schools as “big enough to have a highly competitive number of courses yet small enough to maintain a true sense of community.” It is possible to maintain this sense of community because there is one school for each cluster of grade levels. Marisa Martin of the Rankin County School District listed several special offerings. At the elementary level there is the Balanced Literacy Approach (individualized instruction) and the “Let’s Go Walkin’” exercise campaign. For high school seniors there is The Senior Project, an intensive investigative undertaking in career exploration, and for K-12 there is the Thinking Map Technique, a tool for organizing thoughts, teaching how to take notes, as well as preparing for writing assignments.
