Baby-Maternity Marketplace

We’ve reviewed several of the newer products designed to make life easier for moms. From feeding to soothing and prenatal care, there are a multitude of products out there. One of our favorites, a book called the Baby Gizmo Buying Guide will help you unravel the mysteries of how to choose exactly what you and your baby need.

My Brest Friend was developed with the input of new moms, babies, and breastfeeding experts who set out to create a pillow whose sole purpose was to answer all the needs of breastfeeding moms and babies. 50 prototypes and a global patent later, the pillow is loaded with features moms love. Its wrap around design secures to the body helping mom and baby maintain positioning and latch-on. A back rest helps you maintain good posture during feeding and prevents sore back and neck. A firm, flat cushion keeps baby from rolling and adjustable, silent-release strap fits Moms or Dads comfortably and unlatches without waking baby. Its convenient pocket keeps water bottles, burp cloths, phone, and other items within reach.

The Pump In Style Advanced breast pump helps moms provide babies with the health benefits of breast milk by using Medela’s research-based 2-Phase Expression® Technology, which is proven to help moms get more milk in less time.

My Brest Friend and the Pump In Style Advanced breast pump are available locally at Mississippi Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic, 111A Depot Drive, Madison. Call 601-989-7979 or visit www.msbfmedclinic.com.

For a newborn, nothing seems to compare to the comforts they’ve come to expect from the womb or the secure feeling of being held by mom or dad. After years of research and testing in soothing techniques, Graco Children’s Products unveils an innovation in infant soothing. Sweetpeace is a Newborn Soothing Center. The Sweetpeace provides a peaceful multi-sensory experience for babies and is recommended for infants up to 25 lbs. New Book: The Baby Gizmo Buying Guide,
From Pacifiers to Potties…Why, When and What to Buy for Pregnancy through Preschool

Do you really need to spend a thousand dollars for a crib? Are three different strollers really necessary? What the heck is a stand-up fold? You’re a smart chick…why is this so hard? It doesn’t have to be! Authors, mothers of five and award winning entrepreneurs, Heather Maclean and sister Hollie Schultz believe this generation is a “smart mama generation” and set out to help the new modern mom make sense of it all. Maclean and Schultz truly understand the frustration and headache of mindless baby product shopping and have embarked on a mission to teach other moms how to choose the right products for their children. The result? The Baby Gizmo Buying Guide, the smart-mom’s handbook to all things baby! $16.99 at www.babygizmo.com.

KickTrak help measure fetal movement

Did you know that movement is one of the best indicators of a baby’s prenatal health? Decreased fetal movement—less than ten movements in two hours—has been shown to increase risk for stillbirth, preterm birth and other pregnancy complications.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women start counting kicks at 28 weeks (24 for high risk pregnancies). Moms-to-be note how long it takes their baby to make ten movements, once a day when the baby is most active. KickTrak was developed by an obstetrician to make it easier for women to record their kick counting sessions, instead of using a clock with a pen and paper. Each time the mom-to-be feels her baby move, she simply presses a button and KickTrak records the number of kicks and time duration. It notifies the mom when her baby has made ten movements. Changes in the data allow a mom to promptly notify her healthcare provider of problems and potentially reduce the risk of pregnancy complications. Babykick also offers moms-to-be free, downloadable kick counting charts at www.babykickalliance.org. $39.95 at www.babykick.com.

Hotslings pouches are an innovative design that combines fashion with function. Just because you are a mom (or dad) now doesn’t mean you have to be stuck with bears, bunnies, blue plaid and pink gingham. Nor will you be stuck with a front pack that only is good for your baby’s first few months while it pulls mercilessly on your upper back. Hotslings pouches are extremely compact, folding easily into your diaper bag or purse. Stop carrying that heavy car seat bucket! Available locally at Play Pen, 4754 I 55 N, Jackson. 601-362-7256, and at www.babysupermarket.com.

This 4-in-1 maternity top and skirt by Japanese Weekend can be worn 4 different ways—as a reversible top and skirt! Available locally at Tummies Maternity Boutique in Magnolia Marketplace in Flowood. 601-992-0777. tummiesmaternity@yahoo.com
